SURDAR is an international research project that started in March 2002 and which is being managed by the Lancaster University Management School, in co-operation with FISE, the Polish Academy of Sciences Institute of Geography and Spatial Organisation, Karlsruhe Universtät Institut für Wirtschaftspolitik und Wirtschaftsforschung and the Research Centre for Economic and Statistical Studies of The Central Statistical Office & The Polish Academy of Sciences. The aim of the project is to promote the sustainable development of Central and East European rural areas by analysing the conditions and barriers to their economy's potential.

The analysis will be done by surveys conducted in Poland. Results of the research will be completed by case studies of specific rural municipalities and evidence that describes socio-economic situation of the Polish countryside. The research will be disseminated at seminars and workshops targeted at Polish politicians and local government authorities, as well as by a report, which will be published after the end of the project (March 2005). The publication will be translated into English, ensuring broad access.

FISE's task is to conduct case studies, prepare the publication and transfer experiences - research results to practical activity sphere of the Polish local governments. We are involved in preparing the groundwork of the research instruments and managing technical assistance for the participants of the project. Since July 2003 we have taken over part of the duties connected with compiling and analysing the data set (firstly the Regional Data Basis), which describes the socio-economic situation of rural areas in Poland.
